Mike Salsbury, The Chronicle
Riverside Fire Authority Chief Jim Walkowski is contending with a failed emergency medical services levy for the fire department and the cutbacks in services that will result. If 64 no votes had been cast as yes instead, the levy would have hit the 60 percent supermajority it needed for passage.

The levy for the Centralia area fire department has failed.

While the results of the primary election won’t be final until next week, further counting of ballots on Tuesday only widened the margin between yes and no voters from last week’s tally.

There are 58.78 percent ballots approving the 10-year emergency medical services levy. The measure requires 60 percent approval to pass.

With only six ballots left in the Lewis County Auditors Office to be tallied, there’s no chance for the results to change, according to longtime Auditor Gary Zandell.

Riverside Fire Authority Chief Jim Walkowski on Tuesday was deeply disappointed and troubled by the budget challenges he now faces.

The requested 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value would have gone toward maintaining current paramedic services and the most likely change will be removing the paramedic unit on duty at Harrison Avenue, Walkowski said.

Rep. Alexander Lauded by Chehalis Officials
By The Chronicle

State Rep. Gary Alexander, R-Olympia, was given the Chehalis Community Spirit Award on behalf of the city and the Chehalis Business Association last night at city hall.

Alexander received a standing ovation from the council and others in attendance and was thanked for his work on House Bill 3375, which secured $50 million in state funds for a future Army Corps of Engineers flood reduction project in the Chehalis River Basin.

City Manager Merlin MacReynold said that Alexander met with city officials regularly following the floods, and made room for them in an otherwise crowded schedule.

“We should be very lucky to have him as our representative,” MacReynold said.

Alexander said that he is confident a flooding solution will be identified and funded in the coming years. He said the community’s approach to flood mitigation could very well become a model for the rest of the state.

“There is probably nothing that has meant more to me than this issue,” said Alexander, who was also given a gold “key to the city.”
