Backpacks Being Given to Jefferson-Lincoln Students on Thursday By The Chronicle The Lewis County Association of Realtors will be at Centralia’s Jefferson-Lincoln Elementary School passing out supplies on Thursday. The Realtors have collected and purchased enough backpacks, filled with the supplies listed on the school’s back-to-school sheet, to provide one to each of Jefferson-Lincoln’s 435 students. The backpacks will be passed out during a meet-the-teacher open house from 2:30 to 3:30 on Thursday afternoon. For more information contact the school at 330-7636. Open House Tonight at Onalaska Fire Station By The Chronicle The Onalaska-area fire department is opening its doors tonight to the public with an open house from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Chief Bill VanHousen said the volunteer department would like to let people know what they’ve been up to. The event will be held at Lewis County Fire District 1’s main station at 244 Carlisle Ave. The district, with about 32 volunteers, will display some of their newer vehicles and tell folks about, for example, their recent acquisition of $56,000 in personal protective gear, which was purchased with a grant, according to VanHousen. Rep. Alexander Lauded by Chehalis Officials By The Chronicle State Rep. Gary Alexander, R-Olympia, was given the Chehalis Community Spirit Award on behalf of the city and the Chehalis Business Association last night at city hall. Alexander received a standing ovation from the council and others in attendance and was thanked for his work on House Bill 3375, which secured $50 million in state funds for a future Army Corps of Engineers flood reduction project in the Chehalis River Basin. City Manager Merlin MacReynold said that Alexander met with city officials regularly following the floods, and made room for them in an otherwise crowded schedule. “We should be very lucky to have him as our representative,” MacReynold said. Alexander said that he is confident a flooding solution will be identified and funded in the coming years. He said the community’s approach to flood mitigation could very well become a model for the rest of the state. “There is probably nothing that has meant more to me than this issue,” said Alexander, who was also given a gold “key to the city.” Citizens Academy Signups Begin By The Chronicle Centralia police are offering a 10-week class to share information about how the police department operates and the policing challenges the city faces. The Citizens Academy is set for Thursday evenings, beginning Sept. 11. Officers and other department personnel will address topics such as how to act on a possible drug house in your neighborhood. The purpose of the Citizens’ Academy is to develop positive relations between the police and community through education, according to a news release.
